What is a united arts fund? |
A united arts fund (UAF) is any collaborative appeal to
raise unrestricted money on behalf of three or more arts, culture
or science organizations. UAFs have existed in the
U.S. since 1949, and today 66 funds operate nationwide, the
largest of which raises more than $12 million in annual support
for its community’s arts and culture activities.
Like
the UAFs in cities as diverse as Charlotte, Memphis, Hartford,
Seattle and Cincinnati, Richmond’s ArtsFund strives to
promote public involvement in arts activities and to raise awareness
of the important role the arts play in our lives, our community’s
well-being, and our children’s preparation for their
future. Most arts groups in American cities function as non-profit
organizations, and they need two basic ingredients to remain
vital: 1) audiences or patrons, and 2) contributed support.
|
 |
What’s so important about the arts? |
| More 50 non-profit arts and cultural organizations
call Richmond home, injecting more than $50 million into
the local economy every year, generating $75 million in revenue
and providing more than 2,500 jobs. These groups do more
than add to our economy, they make sure a wide variety of options
for entertainment, education and personal enrichment are available
to area children, families and visitors. The arts and culture
bring us together, connect us across society’s divisions,
and make our whole community stronger. |
 |
Why does Metro Richmond need collaborative arts and cultural
fund-raising? |
| Because Metro Richmond needs the Arts! Our local
arts and culture organizations generate only about half the funds
they need to operate through ticket sales, membership dues or other earned sources.
ArtsFund raises funds to strengthen and stabilize these groups with steady,
dependable operational support. These resources often strengthen educational
programs and community outreach. Keeping these groups strong helps
to keep
their services and activities available and affordable to everyone.

 |
Where does the money go? |
| Your contribution to ArtsFund supports at
least 15 arts and cultural affiliates in
the Metro Richmond Area, and it also funds smaller project grants
to help new and emerging organizations get going.
|
 |
How does my contribution benefit my family and me? |
Even if you seldom see an exhibit, take an art
class, or attend a concert or a play, the arts play a vital part
in our city’s economy and quality of life — and everyone
benefits from that.
Our children: Your ArtsFund gift will help Metro
Richmond’s arts and cultural organizations engage, inspire
and educate nearly a half-million K-12 schoolchildren through
drama, music, visual arts, historical and cultural experiences.
After-school programs and scholarships provided by ArtsFund organizations
change children’s lives every year.
The Economy: Arts and cultural organizations help define
the ultimate value of our community and add to the image, reputation
and quality of life of our community and for every dollar spent
on the arts, approximately $10 in revenue is generated in related
revenue to restaurants, hotels, retail sales, transportation, space
rental and parking fees.
Our community: ArtsFund resources help our local
arts and cultural groups offer more classes, programs and services
spread broadly in the City of Richmond and throughout Chesterfield,
Hanover and Henrico counties.
